Big Brother under Ch4 scanner

New Delhi: British broadcaster Channel 4 has ordered a review of the editorial practices followed in the making of the controversial reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

The show has been under fire following racist comments made by Jade Goody against Indian actor Shilpa Shetty. The company has said the present series of the show will continue till its end, but didn't say if a new version would start.

"Clearly, many people were worried and offended by what they saw. I want to reassure them that we take the views of our audience very seriously and profoundly regret any offence that may have been caused. The board will receive a full report and seek to identify any lessons that can be learnt for the future," Luke Johnson, the chairman of Channel 4, said after the meeting.

"On behalf of the board, the chief executive (Andy Duncan) and I have commissioned a review of the editorial and compliance processes that support Big Brother," he said.

The programme will now continue to be on air until it is completed next week when a favourite among the contestants emerges with television viewers.

The racism row has subsided after viewers overwhelmingly voted on Friday to evict Jade Goody, 25. Goody was seen as the ringleader in the alleged bullying of 31-year-old Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

According to Sunday Telegraph, Vanni Treves, who resigned as Channel 4 boss in 2003, urged Duncan to pull the plug on the programme, which he said exploited the 'unhappy and the unfortunate'. He called the show a 'grotesque travesty'.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone accused Channel 4 bosses of using 'racism to get more profits', while Trevor Phillips, the chairman of Britain's Commission for Equality and Human Rights, accused them of turning a deaf ear to racism.
