New Delhi: On the morning of May 16, soon after Arushi Talwar's body was discovered, Hemraj, the domestic help at the Talwar home was the prime suspect. That was until his own corpse was found on the Talwars’ terrace.
A week later, as Dr Rajesh Talwar was arrested for the double murder, the police gave the crime a motive.
“That time, he (Dr Rajesh Talwar) saw them (Arushi and Hemraj) in an objectionable position – that does not mean a compromising position – but one which he did not like seeing,” IG Meerut Range, Gurdarshan Singh had stated.
It is this insinuation about Hemraj's character that has upset his bereaved family.
“He is dead. Whatever you will say, he cannot listen. And she is a child, whether mine or someone else’s or even his. You can say whatever you like just because he is dead?” said Hemraj’s uncle, Ram Prasad.
On May 15, Hemraj had even told his son-in-law, Jeeva, that Nupur Talwar had asked him to remain with Arushi at the Talwar home, instead of following the daily routine of going to their clinic.
“He always went to the clinic at 5 pm. That day he called me at 5.30 pm. I asked if he did not go to the clinic and he said no, 'because madam had said that the girl is alone at home, ‘don't go to the clinic, stay at home’,” said Jeevan.
“He was at least 45 or 46, he had a wife and young children. This is very wrong,” said Ram Prasad.
Hemraj's family's loss is double – not only has the only bread-winner of the family been murdered, there are fingers being pointed at his character.
