Cheap veggies are a boat ride away

Dal Lake : While vegetable prices are rising across the country, a small market in Srinagar's Dal Lake continues to function oblivious of the price hike.

At Dal Lake, at around 4 AM everyday, shikaras (boats), loaded with green vegetables make the rounds.

This floating vegetable market called Gadroo has been operating on the lake itself for the last 30 years.

Garden-fresh vegetables are sold here at a much cheaper price. For instance, four gourds which sell for Rs 60 in the local market are available at Gadroo for half the price.

Says a vegetable seller, Guhlam Hassan, "Both local people and outsiders come to this market to buy vegetables because they are much cheaper than what's other markets."

A florist, Bashir Ahmad adds, "Vegetables are grown by the sellers themselves. There is no fuel cost involved, only labour."

The only drawback of this floating market is the shikara jam it creates everyday. But nobody's complaining.

A Swiss tourist, Simon says, "We have seen something like this in Kerala, but nothing like this vegetable market. It's really nice. I have never seen anything like this ever before. It's very exceptional."

The vegetables that are not sold are taken to the local markets later in the day.

The best part of this market, say happy customers, is the fact that despite the low costs, one can haggle too and reduce the prices further because of the huge competition in this small area.
