Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s capital has been home to classical culture for ages.

But times have changed, and so have passions and the city boasts of the highest number of bloggers in the country.

"Maybe it's the early adoption. Some people started blogging very early, and it has caught on across the board. Mainly IT people to began with it. But now it's gone to other domains. So you have doctors blogging, lawyers, astrologers, police officials," Associate Director of Sulekha (a blog-hosting portal) Interactive Services, Kiruba Shankar says.

Shankar is a rowing enthusiast, a young father and has been blogging since 2001.

Similar are the stories of many youngsters across Chennai. Adel Anwar is a young entrepreneur (Head, Business Development of TransIndia Marketers, to be precise) with no time to spare. On the go, most of the time, he's been hooked to blogging since late 2004.

Different lives, different jobs, different passions. Yet, they're thrown together by an obsession for blogging - an obsession that has taken Chennai by storm, making it the city with the highest number of bloggers in the country, for the third year in a row.

As URL identities met and links were made, the first Bloggers Meet in the country happened in Chennai way back in 2001.

Realising the power and reach of blogs, Anna University in Chennai introduced blogging as a course itself - a first for any institute in India.

Now, another first is on the cards in India's "blog capital".

The city will soon play host to bloggers from across the country in a Blog Camp that will also have international bloggers joining in through video conferencing.

"Generally, conferences are one to many. An unconference is many to many. In the sense that unconferences are generally very relaxed, open atmosphere. The kind of events, ideas that pop out during such events are tremendous," says Anwar.

Aishwarya is a Bharatnatyam dancer, and super organised book shopper and someone who's marketing job is an excuse to socialize. She has been blogging for a year-and-a-half and plans to attend the Bloggers’ Unconference .

"It probably wouldn't go in the way a conference would, like there wouldn't be a welcome note, we wouldn't invite a chief guest and have him talk something no one wants to know. Probably it won't have the structure and therefore the peace that a conference would, but it'll be fun nevertheless," says Aishwarya.

And even if you don't have a blog or have no clue what a blog is, you're still welcome to walk right in the Blog Camp where cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar is expected to make an appearance.
