Chennai cops nab conman who married to swindle

Chennai: Hyder Ali was a romeo in cyberspace. But his victims found that out too late.

Hyder had met one of his victim's relatives as IAS officer Sudarshan, working with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. He promised to work magic for the entire family.

"When he came to see the alliance, he told me that he would help get my son into a good engineering college if I gave him around Rs 4-5 lakhs. I gave him Rs 50, 000, but later on, we got slightly suspicious, and I stopped it,” said one of the relatives of the victim.

But he got off cheap. Hyder had swindled almost 40 other girls from around the country, even marrying four of them before the police got their hands on him.

Hyder sometimes pretended to be a software professional from the UK, leaving the girls after taking their money and passports.

"The girls should be more careful and should verify details before taking such steps. Also, the websites and mobile phone networks should take more precaution,” said Joint Commmissioner of Police, Ravi.

"On our website we have options where we have told our members they can go for verification of the profile,” said business head of bharatmatrimony.com, Uday Zokarkar.

An ex-porn actor, Hyder Ali was arrested in Trichy last November for making blue films and it seems it was after his release that he reinvented himself as an online casanova.
