Chennai croons to the tunes of Hariharan

CNN-IBN

Chennai: It was a treat for music lovers on Sunday evening as maestros Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan came together at the Nehru indoor stadium in the city for a concert.

The duo sang close to 30 songs from Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films, apart from ghazals, classical and pop numbers.

CNN-IBN caught up with Hariharan before the event and asked him about the state of Tamil film music.

Hariharan said there was a rawness, an innocence in Tamil music mostly because of the changes and the new actors coming about in the Tamil film industry.

He said that new themes in Tamil movies were about portraying normal, everyday people, not larger than life images who needed to know how to sing flawlessly and thus, as a result, there was a change coming about in the music in films as well.

"The Tamil industry is definitely going through a phase of changes. And during these changes, everything is not the way it should be. People are experimenting and they want to do something different. And because of these changes, something may click and something may not. Whatever clicks may go on to become a phenomenon," he said.
