Chennai: Three members of a family were killed and one injured in a head-on collision when a drunken driver rammed his Toyota Innova into their car on Thursday.

The dead were identified as Tata Precision Industries CEO Ravinder Kulkarni, his wife Shailaja and their son Aniket. The only survivor of the tragedy was Kulkarni’s elder son Ashis, who is now recovering at a private hospital.

“This is a tragic loss. My elder brother, his wife and my younger nephew are all dead. I can only wish that the driver community were more careful,” Ravinder’s brother Bhuvanesh Kulkarni said.

The police have arrested, Shivaguru, the drunken driver of the Innova, and have recovered empty beer bottles from his car.

“The driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was driving at a very high speed from the opposite direction. We have booked him under Section 279 (rash and negligent driving), 337 (causing simple injury) and 304(a) (causing death). Under these cases and according to the latest Supreme Court ruling, he will be penalised for minimum ten years,” Inspector, Mamallapuram Police Station, Veliappani said.

The accident is yet another reminder of the drunken-driving menace on the East Coast Road of Chennai. Known for its scenic beauty, the ECR is now becoming increasingly notorious for drunken-driving, which has resulted in the death of several innocent people.

About 6000 drunken driving cases have been registered in Chennai over the past six months — over a 100 cases in the last five months in the 23-kilometre stretch of the East Coast Road alone.
