Chennai: The unique e-challan system has been a success in Chennai. What is even better is that the new initiative is keeping corruption at bay.

The Chennai traffic police's new initiative has turned a trickle into a flood. Four months after they launched the e-challan system, traffic policemen have begun booking 10000 to 12000 cases per day from the earlier 3500 cases.

Not just that, there are other advantages too.

The system helps trace past violations and previous offenders with ease.

Since the software is pre-programmed with specific fine amounts for each offence, there is little chance of corruption as long as offenders insist on an e-challan.

The police can now pinpoint specific areas where particular offences are repeated.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Traffic in Chennai S Sivanandam said, "Everything is incorporated in the bill itself. If it's a 'no parking' offence, earlier some officials could write Rs 200 and get money, now they can't do that because it's all incorporated in the machine. If it is no parking, the fine is Rs 100 rupees."

While the Chennai Police is hoping the e-challan system will help in curbing corruption, the huge increase in the number of cases being booked everyday seem to indicate a worrying trend. It now remains to be seen whether schemes like the e-challan system can actually help in controlling and bringing down traffic violations in the future.
