Chennai group works for a road without hurdle

Chennai: A group of people in Chennai have come together under the banner of 'Walking Classes Unite' to help make the road ahead for pedestrians a little better.

They will assess the condition of roads and pavements and have a special focus on children who have to brave heavy traffic while crossing streets.

For Srinivasan, a physically challenged child, going to school in the morning is an ordeal. Making matters worse for him are the speeding vehicles and bad pavements.

“Most people drive rash and don’t even stop to think of a physically disabled person on the street. They sometime bring the vehicles really close,” says Srinivasan.

It's to solve the problems of those like Srinivasan that this group of pedestrians in Chennai has got together under the banner 'Walking Classes Unite'. The rally is to assess the condition of roads and the utility of the pavements.

"The height of the pavements is very high and there are manholes that are jutting out at about 6 inches to 1 foot above the pavements. There are holes in the pavement and uneven stones all around,” says Assistant Professor, Madras Institute of Developmental Studies, Karen Coelho.

"We need to focus on children with special needs who've problems in crossing the road,” says director, Annie Shyam.

Although it would take more than a rally for all that, however, at least it's a beginning.
