Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu): Most Indians remember Sriperumbudur as the place where Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. But over the years this small town near Chennai has developed into one of the biggest electronics hub in India.
The very fact that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugrated the Flextronic unit in Sriperumbudur underlines the complete transformation of this small town.
"This park will make its mark in the world of enterprise, just as Rajiv Gandhi made his mark as the youthful builder of a new India," said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"The establishment of this major electronics manufacturing project is in many ways a most appropriate tribute to Rajiv Gandhi," said Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Flextronics is investing $100 million to manufacture telecom equipment and Nokia has set up a Special Economic Zone here.
Other entrants include Taiwan-based Honhai-Foxconn, the world's second largest EMS manufacturer, and Motorola. Other major brands already present are computer hardware giant Dell and automobile biggie Hyundai.
Says CEO at Flextronics Michael McNamara, "We selected Chennai for this industrial park because of technical talents, the official logistics infrastructure and cost effective operations."
Sriperumbudur will attract an investment of around $1 billion over the next three to four years, creating between 2 to 5 lakh jobs.
Even the Prime Minister has promised an IT hardware manufacturing policy to make the sector more competitive.
A little more than a decade ago, Sriperumbudur was infamous for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Over the intervening years, things have changed dramatically with the industrialisation. Now the town can rightfully lay claim to being the electronics hub of India.
