Chennai: A 22-year-old newly-married man was murdered on Saturday night in Maduravoyal following a drunken altercation with a friend. He allegedly received over 30 cuts to his body and died at a hospital. Police sources said Arun was involved in fish cleaning work at the Vanagaram fish market. He and his friend Parthiban started work together several years ago but Arun found much more success in the business. He then opened a shop at his house where he started earning higher profits. This had apparently made Parthiban jealous.

On Saturday night, the two, along with other friends, sat down to have a drink. A verbal altercation between the friends resulted in a skirmish. Parthiban then reportedly chased Arun with his fish cleaning knife and sliced him on his head before inflicting a barrage of cuts on his body. Arun succumbed at a local hospital, police said.

It was only last week that Arun’s brother was murdered following an alleged family dispute. When the police tried to reach Parthiban’s house in Sri Lakshmi Nagar to arrest him, a group reportedly assaulted the few police officers who were part of the team. This was followed by a protest by about 60 people outside the Maduravoyal police station who claimed they belonged to a students outfit.
