Chennai: When 24-year-old Vasanti is asked about her experience then tears are her reply.
Vasathi, a junior artiste in K(T)ollywood, had gone to the Gulf in April to work as a bar dancer with the agent getting her a three-month contract and promising her big money.
Vasanthi returned in June as a shadow of herself unable to walk or talk. No one knows what actually happened to her.
“We don’t know what happened there. The agents say that she fell ill, and they gave some treatment but she was sent back here, all alone in this condition,” says Vasanthi’s mother, Gita.
“Doctors say that she is in shock because of some severe trauma which she underwent there in Dubai. We strongly suspect that she was sexually harassed there,” says Head, Indian Community Welfare Organisation, Hariharan.
NGOs working with victims of trafficking say several junior artistes like Vasanthi are being lured to Dubai.
Once they reach there, many are forced into prostitution. They also allege some of the girls are ill treated if they are unable to attract customers.
“If the girls are unable to get many money garlands, they are tortured, put in dark rooms, not given any food and beaten up. They are also threatened that they wont get their passports, and will never be able to return to India,” says ex agent, B Baby.
Today Vasanthi helps her mother out in the kitchen and after three months of treatment she can speak with much difficulty yet she has not uttered a single word about what happened.
Doctors say asking too many questions could only worsen her condition.
The police are now trying to catch the agent who got her to Dubai, to shed light on the mystery.
