Chennai: The restaurants and hotels in the city have in principle, agreed to bring down the price of idlis and dosas which had recently skyrocketed.
India remains worried about the high inflation and food crisis. However, the common man in Chennai can now heave a sigh of relief.
"If the restaurants cooperate a little bit and reduce the costs a little bit, it wll help the common man,” says Ganapathi.
Rising prices had driven up the price of the quintessential dosa, idli and vada in Chennai.
The price of an average meal had gone up from Rs 30 to Rs 45. However, restaurants in the city have now in principle agreed to slash rates following an appeal from the state government.
"Last three months the cost of raw materials increased around 30 to 40 percent. However, our rates have increased only up to 15 to 20 per cent," says General Manager, Ratna Cafe, Srinivas Rao.
However, the actual solution they say lies with the government itself.
"We expect the government also to take the same measures. They just can't ask us to bring down the rates. It's their duty to see that they also reduce the rates of the essential commodities,” says Chairman, Sangeetha Residency, P Rajagopal.
The restaurant owners have agreed to standardize the prices in a week's time. However, the question is whether the common man is happy about the move.
"We being the middle class people, every rupee matters a lot. When the prices of idlis and dosas come down, it really helps the middle class," says Nirmal Patel
Many people including Balaji feel, “It's not fair on part of the government to ask hoteliers to bring down the prices. The government has to address the larger issue of bringing down the prices of the inputs.”
While the government feels that bringing down the prices of the food items will help the common man, many others feel that the actual solution lies in bringing down the prices of the essential commodities.
