Chennai: After the dramatic scenes enacted on Madras High Court premises that shocked the nation, Tamil Nadu police is now in the firing line. The Supreme Court has directed Tamil Nadu government to transfer four senior police officers out of Chennai city for their role in the lawyers- police clashes

But that is not all the court has even set up a committee under retired Supreme Court judge B N Shrikrishna to look into alleged police excesses.

“The committee has also been asked to submit its interim report to the court in ten days time recommending if any further action needed to be taken against policeman,” says P H Parekh.

The court has also asked the Tamil Nadu government to deposit Rs 20 lakh with the Madras High Court which will be disbursed among the lawyers for the damages caused to their vehicles and other property.

But only so far for the lawyers they too came in for flak from the court.

“You should respect the court and maintain decorum. There are some amongst you who are causing the trouble some lawyers having political affiliations conduct meetings in the high court premises and this must stop,” the Chief Justice of India said.

But this healing touch by the court has not been able to persuade Tamil Nadu lawyers to resume work.

Maybe its time that the Supreme Court sends out a strong message to the advocates, which says that the disruption of judicial work will not be tolerated.
