Chennai: Self-proclaimed Munnabhais MBBS are out on Chennai’s busiest traffic signals, cleaning cars and bikes - all to make a point. They are protesting against Centre's proposal to make one year of rural service compulsory for medical degrees, which they say would bring aspiring doctors to the streets.

Says a final year MBBS student, “This is Gandhigiri, doctor style.” Agrees his classmate, “This is the worst thing that we doctors will have to do. We want to shock the public by doing this.”

Although it may have more than a hint of elitism, the protest is getting the attention the students are seeking.

“I never knew about this issue. But now that I do, I will certainly tell my friends about it and ask them to spread the word around,” says Chennai citizen Dinesh.

Gandhigiri may work when it comes to spreading awareness. But it's the Sambasiva Rao committee, set up to look into the issue, which could well have the final word.
