Chhattisgarh: 19 Naxals killed, 5 held

Raipur: Nineteen Naxals were killed and five arrested in two separate shootouts in Chhattisgarh on Thursday night, police said.

Ten Naxalites were shot dead and five - including two women rebels - were arrested from Dewapalli area of Dantewada district, about 550 km from the state capital.

Police also foiled an attempt to abduct about 40 villagers from Dewapalli village, and arrested the rebels who had opened fire on the security forces.

Five injured Naxlas were arrested after the shootout but the villagers told the police that ten bodies were dragged away by the rebels.

Four landmines were also recovered among other explosive materials.

In another incident in Chando police station area of Balrampur police district, about 525 km from the state capital, police, acting on information of the movement of a large group of armed Naxals, cordoned off an area near Jalbotha village and asked them to surrender.

But the rebels opened fire on police and nine Naxals were killed in the gunbattle.
