Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh has a habit of changing his seat every five years. He is projected as the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) mascot in Chhattisgarh and this time he is contesting from Rajnandgaon.
Both Raman Singh and his wife Veena Singh are new to the area and since the CM is a busy man campaigning across the state, it's Veena who is staying back in her husband's constituency and reaching out to everybody, especially women.
“Our workers are organised. We don't have to do much. I am there so that they are assured that some one is there. That's it,” says Veena.
In Chhatisgarh, running away from one's seat is not really political cowardice. Even in Rajnandgaon it's okay for the busy Chief Minister to stay away during campaigning. They understand he has to shoulder many responsibilities.
However, the Congress opponent and sitting MLA Udai Mudliar thinks that the candidate's absence is an issue. He underlines that aspect during his low key campaigning.
"I'm not fighting the Chief Minister. I'm fighting the BJP. They have not done anything for the state. Last time when the BJP won the state I won here. I will win again,” says Udia Mudliar.
Development is not an easy plank to counter charges of anti-incumbency. Raman Singh knows that his wife and party workers will bail him out in Rajnandgaon especially with its high percentage of woman voters.
But he'll need a lot of help from the likes of Narendra Modi to sail through in the rest of state and therefore Raman is not leaving any stone unturned.
For Chief minister Raman Singh, Rajnandgaon is the safest bet. His opponent Udai Mudliar won the seat last time by 40 votes and though the BJP was in power here in Rajnandgaon, Mudliar is facing the anti-establishment factor.
