Chhattisgarh razes ashram working for tribals

New Delhi: Chhattisgarh government has demolished a 17-year-old Gandhian ashram in Dantewada.

The Vanawasi Chetna Ashram, working in Dantewada for nearly 17 years, was torn down within minutes with the state government claiming that the ashram was built on encroached land.

Himanshu, a known Gandhian working in the area, says that the matter is still in court but real reason for this devastation could lie elsewhere.

Himanshu had taken the state government to the court over the Singawaram massacre in which 19 people were killed in a fake encounter after which he was marked man.

It was the reason why an independent fact finding committee led by Sandeep Pandey visited Chhattisgarh but it was not just about fake encounters.

An independent fact finding committee says that Himanshu was targeted because of his attempts to rehabilitate villagers living in Salwa Judum camps and the state government believes that if a person is anti-Salwa Judum, then he or she is pro-Naxal and anti-state.

The committee met the Governor and gave their report but they came away unconvinced.

“We got the impression that the Governor was saying that no government can bear the idea of a liberated zone. Only the government should be there... there is no place for NGOs... that is there is no middle ground," said a committee member Sumit Chakravarti.

The Vanawasi Chetna Ashram is just one of the casualties of the war against Maoists and like Binayak Sen, Himanshu too fears for his life.
