Chidambaram claims Kishenji encounter not fake

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday backed West Bengal government's claim the Maoist leader Kishenji was killed in a gunfight and not in a fake encounter. Chidambaram, while addressing a press conference in New Delhi, said that the November 24 police encounter in which Kishenji was killed was not fake.

The Home Minsiter said that the Center has never encouraged fake encounters or killing of persons after they have been apprehended by the security forces.

According to Kishenji's postmortem report six bullets and two splinters from grenades were found in his body and all the bullets were fired from a distance.

However, the Maoists and human rights groups have dismissed the gunfight theory.

After facing serious criticism from the human rights groups, the West Bengal government has ordered a CID probe into Kishenji's death.

Chidambaram also confirmed that the Delhi Police has arrested six suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives on Wednesday in connection with Pune's German Bakery blast and Delhi's Jamia Masjid firing incidents.

He also said that a Pakistani national is also among the six arrested Indian Mujahideen operatives.
