Sivaganga: Finance Minister P Chidambaram is on a high after the farm loan write-off announced in the Budget. The enthusiasm among party workers in Thiruppuvanam, which has become part of the FM's Sivaganga Parliamentary constituency after the delimination exercise, is clearly visible.
“There is great enthusiasm among party workers and I guess they speak for the farming community which has been happy with the farm loan waiver,” Chidambaram said.
The loan write-off is not a favour to farmers, though he fails to admit that agriculture has become less than paying because of past policies and government failure to invest in agriculture
“What is important is not whether farmers have repaid their loans, but whether the nation has repaid its debt to farmers,” stated Chidambaram.
Before the Budget, the Finance Minister was urging people to shun moneylenders, borrow from state-owned banks but not treat loans as a Pongal gift. Now his arguments have changed.
Clearly, when you are facing an election, long-standing convictions have to step aside.
