New Delhi: India's new Home Minister, P Chidambaram is a man on a mission. Sensing the public outrage against politicians, he has decided to curb the red and blue beacon light culture as far as he is concerned. Refusing to upgrade his personal security, he has also reduced one security officer from all those entitled to Y category security.
This step of Chidambaram's has raised many questions against those who are not really threatened but continue to enjoy security.
In all there are a total of 400 VIPs in Delhi and out of a total strength of 60,000 policemen, one-fourth i.e. about 15,000 policemen are on VIP security.
It is this excessive security that is now forcing most VIPs to take up on Chidambaram’s example.
“It is a great step,” says Congress MP Jitin Prasada.
“It sends a good message about the UPA Government,” adds Congress leader Ashwini Kumar.
But then there are those like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party General-Secretary Amar Singh and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad who see red whenever there is talk of reducing their security.
“I don’t subscribe to his (Chidambaram's) model,” says Amar Singh.
The kind of security that a politician gets is increasingly being looked upon as a status symbol. However, post 26/11 the view on the road is that politicians are spending too much time and resources securing themselves and not the people at large.
