Noida (UP): The Nithari village in Noida turned into the theatre of a seesaw battle between an irate mob and the police on Sunday after angry locals turned out in hordes and pelted stones at the house of Mohinder Singh Kohli, who has been arrested along with his domestic help, Surendra Kohli, for the alleged serial killings of several children in the Sector 31 house.

The mob also vandalised Noida medical centre and broke a few ambulances.

In wake of mounting agitation against the brutal killings, the State government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the victims' families.

Police had recovered several decomposed bodies and skulls of children from a drain next to the house on Friday. The house was sealed on Saturday. On Sunday, when the crowd turned unruly, police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob. Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel have been deployed in the area.

Surendra was arrested on Friday and he allegedly confessed to sexually abusing and murdering at least seven children after police found the skeletons following a tipoff. The remains of the children were found buried in plastic bags behind a water tank in the house of a businessman for whom Kohli worked in Noida.

The businessman, Mohinder Singh, and a medical store owner were also arrested, but police have refused to say whether they had any direct involvement in the killings. The police say after the bodies, many of them in parts, were found, the alleged killer, a domestic servant at the house, confessed to luring at least seven children to the home and killing them.

"Now we're investigating further and in due course, we'll come to know more details, including the number of bodies," a police official said.

On Saturday and Friday also, many angry residents had hurled stones at the house. Locals allege that as many as 38 children, mostly young girls, had gone missing in the area over the past 21 months and they accused the police of failing to investigate the disappearances.

Meanwhile, the Noida police have suspended two SOs of Sector 20 police stations and three former chowki in-charge of Nithari village. The police initiated the action after the shocking discoveries of skeletons. Two other policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

On Sunday, former UP chief minister and Bahujan Samajwadi chief Mayawati visited the Nithari village and demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. "We will also write a letter to UP Governor. We also request Central Government to impose President's rule in the state,” she said.

Mayawati has also blamed the administration for not doing proper preliminary investigation, and added that the Chief Minister Mulayam Singh government should resign on moral grounds.
