Child trapped in bore-well hole near Agra

Agra: Rescuers will take at least five hours before they can reach a two-year-old boy trapped in a 150- feet deep hole in a village near Agra.

Sonu fell into an uncovered and unsecured bore-well hole at around 0945 hrs IST on Thursday while playing outside his house in Shamshabad, which is around 5 km away from Agra. The bore-well was dug up some two-three months ago but was abandoned.

A parallel well is being dug up to rescue Sonu but the work is made difficult because of a pond near the bore-well hole. Authorities have lowered biscuits and water to Sonu but it is not clear if the child has been able to reach the foodstuff.

Raghubir Lal, the Senior Superintendent of Police of Agra, told CNN-IBN that rescuers have dug up around 32 feet of the parallel well and hope to reach Sonu, who is trapped at some 60 feet, in another five-six hours.

Sonu has stopped responding to his parents’ calls and rescuers say he is not moving.

“We are trying our level best to rescue the child and machines are being brought to dig up a parallel hole,” Anil Kumar, district magistrate of Agra, told CNN-IBN.

“A technical team is guiding the rescue operation and it has told us that the pond is 30 m away and it won’t affect digging up of a parallel hole,” he said.

Kumar refused to comment on the UP Government’s promise that it won’t permit unsafe bore-wells, saying authorities were currently focusing on rescuing Sonu. “Action will be taken against people who dug up the bore-wheel,” he said.

This is the second such accident in Agra district this year. In March 2008, a two-year-old girl called Vandana fell down an open bore well and was rescued after a daylong operation.
