Familes in Bihar fight seperation by floods

Saharsa: As the flood waters of the Kosi recede, it is leaving behind a heart-rending tale of children seperated from their families and no where to go.

Amidst all the mass despair and destruction that the Kosi left behind, it would be easy to ignore Mithilesh Kumar’s story.

He is 12 years old, studies in a dilapidated residential school in Saharsa and has not been able to trace his family in Madhepura for the last 20 days.

All he has heard from his neighbours is that his home had been swept away 2 weeks ago and no one has seen his parents and siblings since then.

Mithilesh Kumar says, “I tried to call them but no one is picking up the phone.”

He does not even have any family photographs.

Alone and helpless, he asks the media to put up a message on air which read ‘Mummy papa, please call I'm worried. Please come to the hostel if you can.’

Fortunately, Mithilesh has a place to stay at the least.

For eight-year-old Gudia and her 6-year-old brother Pappu, life has been a little less fortunate. They have been living at the Patna railway station for the last 13 days.

As the flood waters in their village in Supaul rose, their mother left them at the railway station and went back to get her cattle. They haven't seen her since then.

Gudia says, “I don't know where she is. Both of us have been here for the last 13 days.”

Across relief camps in flood hit Bihar, children like Gudia, Pappu and Mithilesh have been living on the mercy of others but living with the conviction that their parents will come back for them.

Hopefully, their wishes will come true.
