New Delhi: India has stopped work on a road in Leh following objections raised by the Chinese Army.
Almost half of the 8-km long road had already been constructed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) before the work was stopped.
Even though the road is in Demchok area of south-east Leh of Ladakh and well inside the Indian side on the Line of Actual Control but objections by the Chinese Army forced the Jammu and Kashmir government to stop work on the project.
"This road is very much under our territory. Indo-Tibetan Border Police is also aware of the road. Local residents are upset with Chinese army coming to our area," said Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Chering Dorjay told CNN-IBN.
Demchok is the last inhabited area on the Line of Actual Control.
The road was being constructed to improve connectivity in the area and to provide employment to local residents.
China has a similar road on the other side to which India did not object.
