China goes wild with wildlife tours

Harbin Park, China: It’s the wild side of tourism in China. For a few dollars you can get to see tigers kill a bull in full public view.

Tourists visit the Harbin Wildlife Park in Southern China not only to see wildlife, but what interests them even more is the really wild side of wild life. For around $200 this is what they get to see tigers killing a bull.

Aired first by a British television channel, visuals of tigers attacking a bull have angered animal rights groups.

The activists claim that this proves animal welfare gets low priority in China.

They allege that most of these tigers are overweight and rule out the possibility of tigers killing for food. The activists say these animals are being forced to do this for the entertainment of tourists.

"This is absolutely grim and basic and miserable. These poor animals have got nothing to do, so their mind have gone and they put their feet in exactly the same place each time if you watch closely. And it’s just a repetitive movement to get their minds away from the unutterable boredom," said Animal Rights Activist John Wedderburn.

The news report also showed other alleged forms of animal cruelty in China.

In one instance, pictures showed a bear pulling a car, as a watching crowd cheers.

But these cheers may not last long. China is gearing up to host the 2008 Olympics and these images are not exactly a good PR exercise.
