China grants visa to Arunachal resident

Kibithu/Tawang: Is China readying to bury the hatchet with India in Arunachal Pradesh?

For the first time Beijing granted a visa to a resident of Arunachal Pradesh. However, the signal seems mixed.

Time and again we hear of Chinese transgressions on the border seeking it would appear to realise on the ground political claims being made elsewhere.

So how does the border look from Lungrola in sensitive Tawang to Kibithu in equally sensitive Walong?

The army's concerns in Kibithu lie towards the India, Myanmar and China trijunction.

Intelligence reports indicate an all weather highway being laid by the Chinese towards the Jechepla Pass in Myanmar as the pass provides direct entry into Arunachal and other sensitive eastern states.

“We have our eyes and ears we are able to know their strength, what is their place and what are their future plans. So accordingly we make our strategy and I can assure we are aware of their every activity,” says Post Commander, Kibithu, Col Sanjeev Gupta.

Farther west in Tawang, similar concerns about the pace at which China's network of roads and highways is being laid close to the Line of Actual Control have rose up.

“Their capability is a matter of forces they have and the roads they have built. You can extrapolate but I would say with improved infrastructure you have the capability to move troops and equipment at a faster pace,” says Commander, Tawang, Maj Gen.Dalbir Singh Sidhu.

India will be able to assess the intentions and mettle of Chinese troops when the first joint army exercise is held next week in Chengdu but burying the hatchet may take a lot more time.
