China, Taiwan resume direct flights after 60

New Delhi: China and Taiwan have resumed regular direct flights between two sides for the first time in nearly 60 years.

The first flight from south China touched down at Taipei's international airport this morning with 100 mainland tourists on board. It was given a ceremonial welcome in Taipei.

No regular flights, aside from a few charters, had flown between the two sides since 1949 after the Chinese civil war.

China and Taiwan had entered negotiations in June on improving economic ties and lifting travel restrictions.

There will be 36 round trips per week which will eliminate time-consuming Hong Kong or Macau stopovers for the Taiwanese.
