China teaches etiquette to its citizens

John Vause, CNN

Beijing: Beijing has launched an unlikely crackdown on some cringe-worthy habits that include spitting and slurping.

Not to mention queue jumping, nose picking and public urination. It's an attempt to clean up China's image, ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But some fear these bad habits may be very hard to break.

No more of this please, even if you were once the President of China. Beijing is cracking down especially on public spitting and this as well.

Zhang Huiguag is a government appointed miss manners trying to bring a little etiquette to the masses.

Huiguag says, "This kind of behavior is uncivilized and people should feel ashamed."

In a city where push comes to shove on a daily basis, Communist leaders are worried what the world will see when the Olympics come to town in 2008.

So the newly created "office for orderly bus riding" has sent out thousands of so called "civility supervisors".

Like the very stern Mrs Wang and for those who don't know there is always etiquette lessons: a very different class struggle for these businessmen. Where they learn to not talk with their mouth full, to sip not slurp and which is the right fork.

Authorities say, manners here are slowly improving, and they know this because in true Communist fashion there's a new "civic index" an etiquette scored board of sorts which shows Beijing still has room for improvement before the games next year.

So the government's message is "it's glorious to be polite". Because after all, you never know who might be watching.
