New Delhi: China will tackle climate change, but not at the expense of economic development - that's the message from the Chinese government.
The Chinese government plans to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by a fifth before 2010. It will also aim to increase renewable energy production and energy efficiency.
However, China will not give in to international pressure over global warming by sacrificing economic growth. The responsibility for climate change rests with the rich westernised countries.
China's President Hu Jintao will be taking some of these proposals with him to the G8 meeting in Germany.
