New Delhi: Pakistan and China began a ten-day long joint military exercise north of Rawalpindi. This is the first time they are doing it in Pakistan.
Friendship 2006 is how the first ever exercise in Pakistan with Chinese troops is being promoted. Over 10 days 200 Chinese personnel and a matching number of Pakistani troops will engage in various drills including counter terrorism.
Pakistani Force Commander, Major General Mohsin Kamal said: "The next few days, we are looking forward to a very professionally rewarding and mutually benefiting interaction.”
The Chinese appeared to play it down.
People’s Liberation Army Major General Liu Ming Jiang said: " The exercise will not be directed to any third party. It will not threaten the interests of another country."
China has emerged as a major supplier of conventional arms to Pakistan. But it is the strategic relationship between the two, which is the cause for concern. Beijing has played a key role in helping build Islamabad's nuclear weapon capabilities.
