Chinese hackers target Indian network

New Delhi: After the US, India is at the receiving end of Chinese hackers. Chinese hackers have reportedly stolen Indian Army's strategy reports and also the Government's security briefs.

Experts blame the hacking on departmental infighting and the easy access to Internet.

But defense experts say hackers haven't got India's top secrets. Some data might have leaked, they say, but really vital information is always digitally encrypted, and stored on networks sealed from the outside world.

"If they have got our secret plans, which I have some difficulty in believing, then there is no doubt in my mind, that there will be recast," says former Indian Air Force chief Retd air chief marshal SP Tyagi.

But others say hackers are getting deeper into our networks. India has departments to block them, but infighting can prevent effective plugging of holes.

"Multiple agencies might not share intelligence leads when they are competing in the same area. This is a generic problem everywhere," says former chief adviser, Technologies, DRDO, Dr K Santhanam.

Gulshan Luthra, editor of defence magazine India Strategic, whose website was also hacked, points to even more human weaknesses.

"Senior officers are not computer savvy. They still rely on their personal assistants to check their e-mail. Sometimes the information is so important, that the personal assistants should not be there," says Luthra.

Younger officers often use services like Twitter, Yahoo Mail, Google blogs and groups. But even these websites were remotely manipulated by hackers. So should such services be banned? Experts are skeptical.

"If an officer is not on Facebook, his wife and kids will be. And they will all be working on the same home PC. It is very difficult in this day and age, to cut them off," says Tyagi.

Finally, how sensitive really was the information that India lost?

"The truth must be protected by a bodyguard of lies," says Dr Santhanam.
