New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his address on the final day of the Congress Chintan Shivir in Jaipur committed himself to reforms, called on the party to communicate the UPA government's achievements to the people and urged Pakistan to do more to tackle terror. Beginning his address shortly after UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi spoke on the need to push ahead with reforms, the PM said that the UPA government had fulfilled most of the promises made during the campaigns in the previous two elections.
"We have fulfilled many promises made in the previous two elections. The result of our efforts will be seen in the coming years," said the PM, who lamented that the government had not been able to curb price rise this year. He, however, said that steps will be taken in 2013-14 to curb price rise.
"We are proud of what we have achieved in the past eight years. The economic growth has reduced, however, it has not been as bad as in countries across the world... International crude prices are affecting prices in the country. We were unable to control it. However, we will take steps to curb it in 2013-14," he said.
Speaking on women's safety, the PM said that it was necessary to create an environment where women felt safe. "The law will be changed, if necessary," he added. He urged party members to connect with the youth. "The youth today is more aware and ambitious. We must fulfill their demands," he said.
The usually quiet PM had some strong words for Pakistan on Sunday. He said that the LoC violations by Pakistan Army will not be taken lightly. He told the gathering that the government had conveyed its concerns on the repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan troopers and stressed that the gruesome killing of two Indian Army soldiers will affect relations. "We want friendship with Pakistan, but even it must try," the PM said.
