Click to play videoTirupati: Nearly 10 lakh people attended the launch of Telugu film actor Chiranjeevi's new political party in Tirupati on Tuesday, making the event the greatest hit in current Andhra Pradesh politics.
"It will be a democratic and secular party. It will be a people's party, born from the hearts of the people. It will be a party for backward classes, farmers, workers, women and youth," said Chiranjeevi while announcing the launch of Prajarajyam (People’s Rule).
The launch will remind Andhra Pradesh of that time in 1982 when N T Ramarao announced his Telugu Desam party. NTR pitched for Telugu pride and Chiranjeevi speaks of a ‘Happy Andhra’.
NTR rode the Telugu Desam to power in the very next year after its launch but it remains to be seen how soon Chiranjeevi translates the goodwill he has in the state into seats. He is making the right statements for it though.
"I know your problems, pains and sufferings and will always stand by you," he said
Chiranjeevi says his role models are Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar and Mother Teresa. He says he will refrain from attacking any party or individual. The reference being to the two main political forces in the state: the Congress and the Telugu Desam. But he has no kind words for the present state of affairs in Andhra.
“I wonder whether we are living in a civilized state or in jungleraj,” he said.
Chiranjeevi says his party will be secular and will take all people along. For this he will be depending on the tremendous amount of goodwill he has created over the last few years through his blood banks and philanthropy.
