New Delhi: Christians, the most educated community, also top the list of the unemployed in the country, according to a national survey conducted to find out which communities are lagging behind in employment.
Breaking the common belief that Muslims top the unemployment list, National Sample survey for 2004-05 reveals that in urban areas more than 8 per cent of Christians are unemployed. The corresponding figure for Hindus is 4.4 per cent.
And interestingly the percentage of unemployed Muslims in urban areas is even less.
Further, the number of self employed are highest among Muslims.
Among the salaried, Christians top the list of unemployed followed by Hindus and Muslims.
With a sample size of over one lakh, the survey reveals the facts about states as well.
In Gujarat, while 2 per cent Hindus are unemployed, the number for Muslims is over 5 per cent.
In Chattisgarh, for Hindus it is 3.5 per cent while Muslims account for more than 7 per cent.
Maharashtra is a cause of worry for the Congress – its figures are the worst among Congress ruled states.
In urban areas
- More than 8% Christians are unemployed
- 4.4% Hindus are jobless
- The percentage for unemployed Muslims are even less
But when it comes to literacy rate, Muslims lag behind. But Christians top the list.
