New Delhi: Tyeb Mehta, Francis Newton Souza, Syed Haider Raza and Subodh Gupta among others form the constellation of works, the world's foremost auction house, Christie's, unveiled on Tuesday.

The announcement took place at the preview of works to be auctioned during its September 20 sale of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art in New York.

The preview, held for the first time in the Capital, brought signature works of progressive artists of 1950s and early 60s including that of Akbar Padamsee, Ram Kumar, Ganesh Pyne, Jitish Kallat, Hema Upadhyay and others.

These works, sourced mostly from private collections, will go from the city to New York for the International sale, said Christie's Head of Indian and South-East Asian Art, Hugu K Weihe.

''Our goal is to make Indian art go International and place it at the centre of Western contemporary art, hence the preview here and the sale in New York in September,'' Weihe added.

Commenting on the Indian art scene, Weihe said they were exhibiting tremendous level of creativity because of which they become part of collections in the US and Europe besides Asia, West Asia and South-East Asia.

''For this we have chosen the best and important works of senior artists of the 50s and early 60s for the September auction and we believe this will bring greater recognition to the Indian artists in the world sphere,'' he said.

Due to Indian art market's growing strength, Modern and Contemporary Indian Art is now presented in two sales in New York each year and as part of Contemporary Asian Art in Hong Kong, said Christie's India representative Ganieve Grewal.

Besides regular sales of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art and sale of classical Indian art, Christie's offers biannual September sales devoted to the Arts of India of the Raj era as well as sales of dedicated Indian jewellery in London.
