Gaumukh: When Citizen Journalist Gauhar Raza and his team from Green Peace and Jahangirabad Media Institute came to Gaumukh for a documentary on Global warming and its impact on water bodies, little did they know that they would experience nature's fury first hand. Raza reports the incident.
A part of the Gaumukh glacier suddenly crashed sweeping off two tourists in to the Bhagirathi river.
Their bodies haven't been found yet. Two members of Gauhar's team have also been severely injured.
"Within minutes the glacier crashed and there was huge gush of water. I got stuck in the stream. I'm hurt on my head, arm and leg. I had lost all hopes of survival. I'm alive only by God’s grace," said a victim.
Providing first-aid to the injured has been an uphill task. It's a six-hour drive to the nearest medical facility at Uttarkashi.
"Two people have been severely injured. We are finding it very difficult to take them back. I don’t know how we'll manage it. We'll use mules as we have no other way," said Raza.
Due to global warming, the glacier that gives birth to the river Ganges is fast receding.
