New Delhi: Timely tip offs by a rag picker and a hawker, that helped detect and defuse two bombs in Central Delhi, has built a strong case for the resource-strapped police force to tap people like them to be their eyes and ears in combating terrorism.
Krishna, a rag picker, and Kundan, a roadside vender, whose alertness saved hundreds of lives on Saturday, were rewarded Rs 50,000 and given a job.
Central Delhi is not the only case where an alert mind averted disaster and saved many lives.
There have been several instances — like the one at Children’s Park in Central Delhi — that woke up the spirit of heroism lying dormant in the hearts of ordinary citizens.
One such hero is Pravin Bhalalal, whose presence of mind averted a major tragedy in Surat. Pravin was the first to spot one of the 24 bombs planted across Ahmedabad in an unclaimed black Wagon R car.
The number plate of the car parked right outside his house was the same as the car that blew up outside Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
“I noticed that its number plate belonged to the GJ-6-CD series, which was the same as those of the cars used in Ahmedabad blast. So I called the police, who found out that it contained explosives,” Pravin says.
While Pravin's watchful eyes helped save lives in Surat, Kuldeep Singh, a DTC bus conductor in New Delhi, lost his eyesight three years ago as he threw a ticking bomb out of the bus he was doing his daily rounds on.
“There were two or three coloured wires attached to it, just like they show in the movies. I thought one wrong move could be disastrous,” Kuldeep says.
So even as terror threatens to become a part of our daily lives, some citizens are fighting terror by simply being alert.
