Delhi:It is a matter of pride that India is the host for the 2010 Commonwealth games, but that the Games village is being built on the Yamuna's bed. The Yamuna River in Delhi has been flowing dangerously and large parts of the flood plain area has already been inundated.
CNN-IBN’s Citizen Journalist Kapil Misra is fighting to save the Yamuna, by taking on the authorities.
According to Delhi's master plan the Yamuna's riverbed spans across 97 sq kms. And it is supposed to be a green belt that also helps to conserve water.
The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute report with the DDA clearly states that any permanent construction work on Yamuna's riverbed will be disastrous.
According to DDA's lay out plan the residential part of the Commonwealth Games village is built right on the banks of the Yamuna. And after the 9 day long event gets over, these flats will be sold at high rates to bidders.
“In the name of progress, the PWD is constructing roads on both sides of Vikas Marg. The riverbed is being filled with mud and fly ash. Not only is this an encroachment on the riverbed, but the fly ash will also contaminate Delhi's groundwater supply,” says CJ Kapil
“On questioning weather the road is being constructed on the riverbed, the authorities deny any such allegations” he adds.
Despite difficulties, Kapil put pressure on the DDA authorities. As a result, the DDA has made amendments to its zonal plan. These changes may help save the Yamuna.
