CJ: Child labourers voice their plight

New Deli: Its been 20 years since India signed the Child Rights Convention that bans child labour and still 13 million Indian children below the age of 14 are engaged in child labour.

On the 20th anniversary of India signing the convention, some children have become citizen journalist to tell us their stories.

Citizen Journalist Useeran Khatun from New Delhi says, "I'm Useeran Khatun. I'm 12-years-old and I stay at Seemapuri, New Delhi. I study in Class 7 but I also have to work as a rag picker. I work because we are poor and I have to bear the cost of my studies and also contribute to my family's expenses. I want to become a lawyer and fight for the rights of children like me."

Another citizen journalist Mahalaxmi, who lives in Chennai, says, "My name is Mahalakshmi. I study in 7th standard in a corporation school. And because of my financial condition, I also work as a domestic help. My mother is not well and our financial situation is not so good. So I have no choice but to go for work. I love studying. I want to learn a lot. I want to become a doctor and serve the people."

"I don't know that child labour is against the law... But I have been working for two years now because that's the only way I can achieve my dreams," added Mahalakshmi.
