New Delhi: Pakistan’s former Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikar Mohammed Chaudhry is in Lahore for a short while.
Chaudhry was given a hero's welcome on Friday night, greeted by scores of supporters, many of them lawyers and human activists at the Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Chaudhry, who is scheduled to leave for Multan via road on Saturday, arrived at the airport from Islamabad at 8:00 pm.
Many lawyers and Airport Security Force (ASF) personnel also had a minor scuffle when the ASF personnel tried to ward off the lawyers from the Arrivals Gate of the airport.
There was light security on the occasion. However, security measures have been tightened in the city as many NGOs activists had gathered at the intersections on the Chaudhry’s way to welcome him.
Chaudhry’s caravan left for GOR-I from the airport at 8:30 pm and took more than three hours to reach its destination, which normally takes 20 minutes from the airport. His defence counsel accompanied the CJ.
The SCBA has announced that Chaudhry would be given a “historic welcome” at the Punjab University Campus Bridge from where he will formally start his trip to Multan.
“We should live for Pakistan,” Chaudhry said to the lawyers who had come to receive him.
The President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf had triggered a political crisis on March 9 when he suspended Chaudhry for alleged fraud and nepotism.
Prominent figures within the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q are now openly criticising Musharraf's sacking of the Chief Justice.
