New Delhi: The Pakistani army appears to be moving on the 48-hour-deadline announced by military sources two days ago.
Army authorities confirmed that an operation was underway in the southern part of Dir district. They claimed that one Taliban commander had been killed and four security personnel were injured.
Taliban commander Mansoor Dadullah said his men were fighting back and warned that no quarter would be given.
Local media quoted him as saying, “We know who the people are who raise their voices for the operation. We know them, they are on our hit list and we will target them.”
His warning comes in the wake of reports that Pakistani Taliban supremo Baitullah Mehsud is sending 300 suicide bombers to target Pakistani cities.
But at the same time pro-Taliban cleric Sufi Mohammad has initiated moves for an amnesty and a ceasefire.
Sufi Mohammad is pressing for a general amnesty that will help release nearly 200 Taliban prisoners. In return he promises to issue a religious edit in concert with other clerics that would disarm the militants.
It would also ensure the government's writ in Taliban controlled Swat and Malakand
