Jharkhand: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren is expected to meet state Governor Syed Sibtey Razi on Monday to stake claim to form the government.
However, his prospects seem dimmed with five Independent MLAs refusing to back him as chief minister. The MLAs, who
hold the key to getting the numbers right in the Assembly, have made it clear that Soren may have fought a war for the creation of the state, but he is not acceptable to them as the chief minister.
"We all are of the opinion that we don’t want a change in leadership, “ says Independent MLA Stephen Marandi.
In the 80-member Jharkhand Assembly, JMM has 17 MLAs, Congress nine MLAs, RJD has seven members and eight Independents. All of them put together will reach the half way mark of 41 seats.
But what is keeping the Centre on tenterhooks is Soren's threat of withdrawing support to the UPA Government.
So, the ball is now entirely in the Centre's court. UPA will have to take a political call and decide whether it wants Razi to continue with an Assembly in suspended animation to explore possibility of a government formation in the future, or dissolve the House.
However, Soren and his crisis managers know that it will not be a cakewalk for them.
