New Delhi: In September 2008, CNN-IBN unearthed a baby-selling racket in the heart of the Capital.
Adivasi Seva Samiti, a Delhi-based placement agency, used to source minor girls from Bihar and Jharkhand, and force them to work as domestic helps. The girls were raped and forced to conceive babies, which were sold off for an exorbitant price, without the girls’ consent.
CNN-IBN reporters went undercover posing as a couple wanting to buy a baby.
When asked how much it costs to buy a baby, Preeti, an agent with the placement agency, said she sold the last one for Rs 10,000. Her conversation was recorded on a hidden camera.
Acting on leads provided to them by CNN-IBN, the Delhi Police initiated investigations into the case.
After conducting raids in Om Vihar and Uttam Nagar, police discovered a 20-day-old baby and arrested Preeti and other agents, who ran the placement agency, from Shakoorpur area of the Capital.
The investigative report sent shock waves into the National Commission for Women and the Child Welfare committee that came out in defence of the victims.
Several hearings later, Delhi High Court on Wednesday praised the report filed by CNN-IBN saying: “CNN-IBN also deserves appreciation for bringing the case to light and triggering the judicial exercise."
The court stated that the metropolitan magistrates, handling sensitive matters pertaining to children, needed to be more vigilant and cautious. It also ruled that the Child Labour Act needs to be strictly reinforced and that the state needs to provide a healthy environment for development of children.
