Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai are the cities considered as the face of a modern and progressive India. But a closer look at the roads in these cities reveals a grim picture of neglect and corruption. Enough has been said about the roads marred by potholes, it’s now time to get up and do something about it.

Mumbai
Bandra can easily top the list this year for being the suburb with the largest number of potholes. Virtually every lane and by lane offers nothing less than a bone-shattering ride to the commuters. And with the contractors failing to meet the civic body's deadline for repairing badly potholed roads, the roads in the rest of the roads are not doing any better either.

What the citizens have to say
Mumbaikar 1: The condition of roads here is pathetic. I’m pregnant and seeing the state of the roads, I can’t even imagine traveling on them.

Mumbaikar 2: Don’t even get me started on the road between Chembur and Sion. It’s just too much.

Chennai
The civic agencies of this southern mega-city dug up roads, which, even a year later, are still waiting to be covered up. Projects to build new flyovers and subways and to lay gas and water cables choke the city's main roads. Never mind the signboards regretting inconvenience, the commuters are not amused.

What the citizens have to say
Chennaiite 1: Because of not being aware of when the roads are dug up, the entire work is obstructed. We are not able to reach anywhere on time.

Chennaiite 2: They are not even looking at the bad condition of the roads. They need to start looking at it and for that they need to get out of the siren cars where the police clear everything for them and travel like a normal citizen. Only then will know.

New Delhi
The Capital was once proud of its wide and smooth roads. However, that’s no longer the case. Many blame unscientific road-building technology, private contractor mafia deliberately doing a bad job to get the contracts renewed and the tense political undercurrents between the different authorities. The ground reality, though, is that at the end of the day, it’s the daily commuter who has to face the horrors of traveling on pothole-marred roads.

What the citizens have to say
Delhiite 1: We pay our taxes on time as they expect us to. But all we get in return is bad roads.

Delhiite 2: It doesn’t feel like I’m in the Capital. It seems as if I am in some rural area.

For people in Indian metros, it is a case of bad management of their roads and tax money.
