Colleague kills 5 police jawans

New Delhi: Five jawans of the Sikkim Police were killed and one was injured when a colleague of theirs opened fire on them in Daryaganj, Old Delhi, on early Sunday morning.

J B Subba allegedly opened fire after a brawl. Subba is now being interrogated in police custody. The Sikkim Police team was guarding a Dena Bank treasury in Daryaganj, which comes under Central Delhi district.

The Delhi Police got a call at around 0450 hrs IST and when they reached the spot they found five jawans dead.

A security guard who was on night shift outside the bank treasury said he heard gunshots. “I said I hear shots but the other guard said he hadn’t heard anything. We later came to know that five people were killed. I think one of the persons who was shot called the police,” said the guard.

The dead jawans are Vishal Tiwari, Karma Bhutia, Shanti Veer, Kumar and Lakshman Subba. Nari Lipcha, who was shot in the legs, is being treated at the Lok Nayak Jayprakash Hospital nearby.

Senior officials of the Sikkim Armed Police are cooperating with the Delhi Police in investigations. The bank treasury is near the historic Golcha Cinema and the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Central Delhi.

Daryaganj is a historic part of the city and famous for its second-hand book market on Sunday.
