DHARMAPURI: In an attempt to create awareness of the evils of child marriage, Collector R Lilly has written a letter to school girls who are preparing for board exams. More than 70,000 copies of the letter have been sent to all Government and Matriculation school girls in the last few weeks. The students’ community has welcomed her novel attempt to uproot the practice.
Speaking to Express, the Collector said that the letter has already made an impact and 80 child marriages have been stopped in the district.
Lilly added that, on visiting the Dharmapuri Government Arts College women’s hostel, she found that students were in search of reference books that would guide them to prepare for competitive exams. As a token of appreciation, the first schedule of books were issued to the hostel library.
