New Delhi: Smile and the world smiles with you - but what if your smile is the one thing that is causing you pain and embarrassment?
For some people, the solution or rather the first step towards it is as simple as logging on the Internet.
That is what Wendy Tait did. She was desperate to smile, but her dental condition was so bad that she just couldn't.
This was even getting in the way of her professional life. After all, front office jobs require a healthy dose of smiles and pleasantries - something that she just couldn't manage.
Her last hope, an online search, for economical treatment brought her to India.
"I came across this website purely by chance, but am happy with what I have got. I am more confident and I am now smiling more," says she.
The treatment Wendy received was extensive. Almost all her teeth are new. It would have cost her an entire life's saving to get even half of that done by a private practitioner in the UK.
Says Dr Bela Jain, who treated Wendy, "We have restored the upper jaw and given implants in the lower portion as well."
Wendy will have to make another trip to India after three months for the last leg of her treatment. She may not have been the first such patient here, but she is definitely one of the first few.
With the Government talking about opening up medical tourism further, these numbers are only set to rise.
