New Delhi: Colleagues of Indian doctor Mohammad Haneef, who was arrested at Brisbane airport on Tuesday night for alleged links with the failed London and Glasgow terror plots, say that he is “quiet by nature and academically brilliant.”
Yet Haneef is now under detention in Australia. Intelligence agencies narrowed down on him after his SIM card was reportedly found on a Jordanian man called Dr Mohammad Asha, one of those arrested in Britain.
But back home in India, Haneef's family is in a state of shock.
“We are really shocked with whatever is happening. We believe that Haneef is an innocent person. He is a polite and humble boy,” Haneef's brother, Mohammad Suhaib says.
While Haneef's Mother, Quratulain says, “I am sure my son is going to return safely. Please pray for my son’s return.”
According to Haneef’s sister Sumaiya, who lives in Bangalore, the 27-year-old doctor was going to visit Bangalore to her see newborn baby.
“He was coming to see my child. My brother is innocent, humble and meritorious. You can check his records. I am not getting any news from the police in UK and Australia. On Tuesday, my sister-in-law got a call from the Australian High Commissioner. I don’t even know what they spoke,” an anxious Sumaiya said.
Haneef studied from a government Urdu school at Mudigere in Karnataka's Chikmagalur district. His late father was a teacher there.
Haneef, who is remembered as a brilliant student, went on to do his MBBS from Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College, which is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore.
“As per the records he was a brilliant student. He cleared his first and second year in first division,” Registrar of Rajiv Gandhi Health University, Dr S Sachidanand said.
Sources say Haneef worked in Liverpool before joining a Queensland hospital as a registrar nine months ago.
Haneef now seeks consular access, as the High Commission in Canberra has submitted its report to the Ministry of External Affairs. Meanwhile, the Indian government says it will cooperate with the investigation, if required.
