Coming soon: Neighbourhood airports

New Delhi: The new Bangalore airport could soon face competition from the old airport. The government's new policy on Greenfield airports clears the way for multiple airports in cities.

Currently, the four airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore are operated by private players.

They are protected by an agreement with the government which says that no airport shall come up in a radius of 150 km.

But the new policy says government has the final say in allowing additional airports.

The policy also does away with the mandatory approval of the Central government. This is to encourage more companies to build airports especially around Special Economic Zones.

The government has also cleared a new policy for private airports. Individuals wishing to set up such airports can now approach the Director General of Civil Aviation directly and will not need to go through the Ministry of civil aviation.

But the airports will have to meet the requirements laid down by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Airports Authority of India, DGCA and BCAS.

Also functions like air traffic services, security, customs and immigration will have to be reserved by Central agencies.
